Feedback on Rubber?

Morning sessions with some NW flow are getting a bit crisp in a longsleeve spring, so it's time. Any feedback on fullsuits? After several years of Mitch's Aleeda specials, I bought my first Hotline wetsuit in 1992. I take pretty damn good care of my wetsuits and in 15 years I've only had two Hotline fulls. Aside from being stuck with less advanced materials/technology, I feel having a wetsuit that lasts is crucial. Of course, comfort/flex matter too. I just don't get it when people talk about having a suit for a season before they need a new one.

Anyway...I've narrowed down the choices. I was bummed to hear that Hotline moved production overseas. Maybe they did that a while ago, but I liked having a suit made in Santa Cruz. I know that in Asia there are really just a couple of manufacturers who do most all of the major brands. Hotline has their own factory in Thailand. Matuse is China. Nineplus is China. Patagonia is what, Thailand too? Bottom line, I believe in Patagonia as a company with strong values. That's a big part of why I'm looking at their suits. I have read mixed reviews on durability, but they sound really comfortable and their guarantee is as good as it gets. I've heard a lot of positives about the Matuse suits as far as comfort, warmth, flexibility. And the Geoprene is a very good thing. They kind of went off with the logos/branding. I hate paying close to $500 and becoming a mini billboard. As I said, I've liked Hotline, but the eco tie-in of the other suits is a major reason I'm looking at them. Nineplus has some nice Yamamoto rubber and it does have style points. I'm not sure about any issues/concerns with workmanship/durability. Heard anything?

I've done my research, but any feedback you have on these suits—especially the Patagonia, Matuse and Nineplus—is greatly appreciated. I'm going to buy from one of these companies.

*EDIT: Tried on a Matuse suit today and it's a no-go. Their XL is way too short for me and they don't have a Large Tall. At least that makes the choice a little easier. All I can say about the suit is that it felt pretty nice if not a little fragile. The materials were definitely buttery.

Dammit!

Sometimes I hate more information...

My Hotline is finally starting to fail after 5 years and I was all hot to get another but if they aren't the same suit they were then then why now...

I like run on sentences, waves and wetsuits and am not afraid to admit it but will not cannot and am not going to spend a 1/2 k on a Patagonia regardless of my admiration of their values or sustainable business model...

Fark!

Not sure if Hotline is/isn't the same suit it was 5 years ago. I'm sure it's probably better as far as materials/tech go. I actually spoke to a woman on the phone at Hotline and she was very helpful and definitely proud of their design and craftsmanship.

Damn, why'd you have to say 1/2 K? That sounds even more expensive.

Hotline has a price-point suit they're calling the Freebird and it sounds promising. I'm still really curious about the other options.

I am going to head down to Cardiff soon to check the Patagonia's in person but I'm with Doc, half a grand is a lot, it better last a looooong time. I was just at SurfRide and they carry mostly O'Neill and Rip Curl. They have some really nice no stiching, glued and taped both inside and outside of sad seams, super super stretchy with the hich tech fleece on the chest and back (all the way down upper thighs on O'Neill Psycho II). I know I could go 3/2 all winter with that setup. They are basically $350 so I figure go check out the Patagonias. Not sure where to get the other brands, I think Mitch's has Matuse?

sorry, "said seams"

Sounds to me like you are looking for warmth, comfort, durability, AND eco-friendly. Personally I don't find the Patagonia price tag all that steep given the iron clad warranty and the fact that I paid $375 for my current Body Glove Vapor which has indeed vaporized in a little over a year (of near constant use, however). That said, the best warranty in the world is small consolation if you are always having to get repairs/replacements due to product failure, which by some accounts seems to be problem with the Prada-gonia suits. My feeling is that until version 2.0 comes out and Patagonia is offering them at more stores than Cardiff (indicating a confidence in product) that I'll wait. Can you wait? By the way I say this as a died-in-the-wool Patagoniac. I am looking into Matuse as well. They seem well made and of course feaure geoprene (limestone based Japanese rubber, same as P-gonia, and Nine Plus). My local shop just picked up Matuse and once they get a size run in, I'm off to try one on. I'll report more on my blog. By the way Nine Plus and Matuse aren't exactly cheap. A 4/3 Matuse runs around $450, I'm not sure on Nine Plus. There is also the Body Glove ECO suit, but I have not seen this suit and they don't advertise how the reduced to petroleum of the neoprene. Lastly, I agree that Hotline used to be a bomber suit and was a loyal Hotline customer for years but alas have found their workmanship has changed for the worse over the years. That is just my observation, I know a lot of guys that still love their Hotlines. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. guys. Daniel, you make some great points regarding the Patagonia suits. You're right-on as far as their limited retail offering of the suit. Are the nineplus suits actually limestone-based? I know it's Yamamoto, but I didn't think it was limestone-based. The nineplus fulls are $280 or so. I'm really curious to hear feedback on those suits.

Need I say it?
The new Pat suits with the front zip are supposed to be even better!
I've no problem with the old one though!
Best suit ever.
If you can't bust the nut on the suit
and you have the dough? You're missing out.
good post!
The ammount of smoothy is a must for me!
And not all companies in China are slave labor!
I happen to know that pats work conditions in China are better than most here!!!!
The Matuse seem nice too.
Their 4/3/2 model but the logos?

Personally i'm waiting to see what happens w/ Pat's suits.

I have no experience of my own to offer on NinePlus suits, but for those interested in trying one on themselves i can tell you that Shelter surf shop in Signal Hill carries them. Shelter can be tricky to find and i've heard the map quest directions are wrong, so call 562-997-0100— btw, the Shelter owners are really good people.

Thanks, rt. Yeah, I called Shelter a couple of weeks back. I should just make the drive up.

I love Xcel. Is that not an option? I assume they're made in Asia like the rest.

Anonymous said...

Xcel could be an option. Especially since the mornings are getting too cold. I don't know if I can hold out for the new Patagonias.

How tall are you? You mentioned that the Matuse suits don't fit you. I'm 6'2 & 210lb, really keen on one of their suits but now you've got me worried...

The Billabong Solution Platinum is the best suit out there in my opinion...Super stretchy, super light, pretty darn durable from what I have seen, and the interior jersey keeps you so warm. I get hot in a 3/2 here is socal..
